Shasha Scripting $100,000 Competition Grant

The Shasha Scriptwriting Competition Grant is open for citizens of the United Arab Emirates, the Middle East or North Africa.  The grant, offered by the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, is for $100,000.  Scripts are accepted in Arabic and English.

“The Shasha Grant brings much needed exposure to emerging talent in the fast-growing Middle Eastern film market and underlines our commitment to develop and promote the next generation of filmmakers from the region, and by accepting Arabic language scripts we aim to encourage more Arabic entries,” said Eissa Saif Al Mazrouei, Special Projects Director, Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.”

PUMA Offers Documentary Development Grants

“An international documentary development fund, offering 40 awards annually of up to 5,000 euros each.”

“This is a rapid response fund, providing resources in the early stages of documentary projects, to shoot and edit a film trailer. The fund is open to filmmakers of any nationality and grants will be awarded on a quarterly basis.  These awards are open to emerging and established filmmakers working anywhere in the world.
We welcome one-off, creative documentary ideas of any length and subject, in any style and form, but we are particularly keen on ideas that speak to PUMA.Vision’s core values of safe, peace and creative.”

Rainbow Enowment Offers Grants for Projects That Support the LGBT Community

National Geographic All Roads Seed Grant

“The Seed Grant Program funds film projects from indigenous and underrepresented minority-culture filmmakers year-round and from all reaches of the globe. The program awards up to 16 film projects annually with grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.  Submission deadlines are quarterly on the 15th of each March, June, September and December. All applications must be received in the National Geographic All Roads office no later than midnight Eastern Standard Time on each of the quarterly due dates. If the due date falls on a Saturday or Sunday Eastern Standard Time, then applications are to be received in the National Geographic All Roads office no later than the Friday before the 15th of that particular quarterly due date.”

POV Calls for Documentary and Film Submissions

“POV, public television’s premier showcase for independent, non-fiction film seeks programs from all perspectives to showcase in its annual national PBS series. All subjects, aesthetic approaches and lengths are welcomed.”

Here are some of the guidelines:

  • Non-fiction only.
  • Works by independent filmmakers.
  • Works that have not been broadcast nationally. 
  • Works that are complete or near completion.
  • Works not previously submitted to POV
  • Works of any length will be considered. Works that comply with PBS underwriting guidelines.

National Endowment for the Humanities offers up to $800,000 in Development and Program grants

“Grants for America’s Media Makers support projects in the humanities that explore stories, ideas, and beliefs in order to deepen our understanding of our lives and our world. The Division of Public Programs supports the development of humanities content and interactivity that excite, inform, and stir thoughtful reflection upon culture, identity, and history in creative and new ways. Grants for America’s Media Makers should encourage dialogue, discussion, and civic engagement, and they should foster learning among people of all ages. To that end, the Division of Public Programs urges applicants to consider more than one format for presenting humanities ideas to the public.”

Latino Public Broadcasting Funds Projects for $5,000-$100,000

“Latino Public Broadcasting supports the development, production, acquisition and distribution of non-commercial educational and cultural television that is representative of Latino people, or addresses issues of particular interest to Latino Americans. These programs are produced for dissemination to the public broadcasting stations and other public telecommunication entities. By acting as minority consortium, LPB provides a voice to the diverse Latino community throughout the United States.”

National Black Programming Consortium Funds African-American & African Diasporic Programs

The National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) offers funding for series, documentaries and online media relating to the black global experience.  “Since 1991 NBPC has invested $7 million dollars in iconic documentary productions for public television; trained, mentored and supported a diverse array of producers who create content about contemporary black experiences; and emerged as a leader in the evolving next-media landscape through it’s annual New Media Institute: Africa Programs.”
