AbelCine has announced a new documentary grant.
Do you have an idea for a compelling documentary? All you need to do is shoot a 2-5 minute long video pitch and upload it to Vimeo and you’ll have the chance to win one of three equipment usage grants worth a combined total of $100,000. But it’s not just us you’re pitching to – it’s your fellow filmmakers as well. Once all the submissions are in, 10 finalists will be determined based on Likes from the Vimeo Community. A panel of judges will then review the finalists’ pitches and determine the three grant recipients.”

Read about the Samsung Challenge:
“New York, NY, July 25, 2012 – Samsung Electronics America, a leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, and the NYTVF, a pioneer of the independent television movement, today announced they will collaborate on a landmark initiative that will provide indie producers and production companies the opportunity to compete for a production budget of $300,000 to create an original short series with accompanying second screen material.
Free the TV Challenge III – “Second Screen Storytellers” is Samsung’s third Free the TV Challenge, following successful competitions in 2010 and 2011. The NYTVF will be accepting entries from August 6, 2012 through September 24, 2012. The winning selection will be announced at the 8th annual New York Television Festival, taking place from October 22-27, 2012, in lower Manhattan. “The World Cinema Fund works to develop and support cinema in regions with a weak film infrastructure, while fostering cultural diversity in German cinemas. The World Cinema Fundsupports films that could not be made without additional funding: films that stand out with an unconventional aesthetic approach, that tell powerful stories and transmit an authentic image of their cultural roots.
The World Cinema Fund has an annual budget of approximately 400,000 EUR and supports exclusively the production and distribution of feature films and feature-length documentaries. The support is focused on the following regions: Latin America, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and the Caucasus.”

“The new Bertha BRITDOC Fund for Journalism is an international film fund dedicated to supporting long form feature documentaries of a journalistic nature.
We are looking for films that break the important stories of our time, expose injustice, bring attention to unreported issues and cameras into regions previously unseen.
This new fund recognises such films are often delicate and protracted, making them difficult to fund. With a mission to enable in-depth analysis of issues through long-form investigative filmmaking, we are particularly looking to work with filmmakers with a journalistic background or those who are collaborating with journalists.
It is key that the journalistic intent is embedded within the film itself rather than the film simply being about a journalist or journalistic institution.”

The aims of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund are threefold: to develop a sustainable audiovisual industry, to encourage and support upcoming audiovisual talent and to promote a vibrant audiovisual culture in Flanders.
VAF accomplishes four main tasks. It provides financial support for audiovisual productions (1) and promotes these in Flanders as well as abroad (2). The Fund also grants scholarships, finances professional training and supports/organises workshops (3) as well as carries out surveys on the audiovisual field (4).”

“Solaris created a “Finishing Fund” to support fellow indie filmmakers who seek the financial and technical resources necessary to complete their films. Greg and Gavin O’Connor originally created the Completion Partners as a response to their own efforts in trying to raise the capital to complete post-production for their film Tumbleweeds. In addition to financing the completion of these films, the Completion Partners Fund will offer the expertise necessary to help navigate the post-production waters, enabling filmmakers to get the film they envision to the market in the most effective way. They will be instrumental in the films’ promotion, festival strategy, and sales strategy.”

“The George Polk Awards grants are given to experienced reporters from newspapers, radio or television to pursue specific investigative projects. The intent is to provide short-term relief to journalists and also to promote investigative articles on the Web. The curator and other officials of the Polk Awards program will select the grantees.
Special consideration will be given to journalists who have been laid off or are otherwise no longer employed by their news organizations, but this is not an absolute requirement. Ideally, an applicant should have a proven track record as an investigative reporter and propose an article or series of articles on a subject with which he or she is familiar.
This program is intended as a resource for the reporter who always has wanted to dig into a particular topic or who has developed useful expertise – who knows “where the bodies are buried” – on a matter of public interest that may be local, national or international in scope.”
