“The Sarah Jacobson Film Grant supports women “whose work embodies some of the things that Sarah stood for: a fierce DIY approach to filmmaking, a radical social critique, and a thoroughly underground sensibility.” This year we plan to give out grants of $2,000 each to support film projects in any stage of completion, from pre-production through distribution.
We are open to films of any length and genre, from documentary to experimental to narrative. We’re looking for projects that in some way embody Sarah’s spirit and represent the values that she articulated in her work—powerful representations of women, a do-it-yourself approach to filmmaking and life, and a passionate commitment to advancing equality without sacrificing fun. Check out some of our past winners’ projects by scrolling through the blog a bit.”

“So often, filmmakers spend so much of their resources making one film that it’s hard for them to produce another. But unlike festivals which give away awards for filmmakers’ past work, the Rooftop Filmmakers Fund is an opportunity to help deserving filmmakers make their next movie. We’ve been screening films since 1997, and every filmmaker who has ever shown a film with Rooftop is eligible for our grants—now over 1,800 artists. Past grantees have included Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild and Glory at Sea, Johannes Nyholm’s Las Palmas, Lucy Walker’s The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom, and dozens more.
Rooftop Films has seven grants available—four for feature-length films and three for short films. In 2012, Rooftop Films will give away over $23,000 in cash grants, and over $50,000 in equipment and services.”

“In 2008 Hot Docs and Canwest partnered in the creation of the Canwest-Hot Docs Documentary Funds. In December of 2010 the funds were renamed the Shaw Media-Hot Docs Funds. These Funds consist of a $3-million completion fund and a $1-million development fund. Shaw Media’s $4-million infusion into the Canadian documentary production community via the Funds will provide much-needed financial support to filmmakers facing financing gaps at critical stages in their projects. Hot Docs will manage and disperse the Funds’ benefit monies over a next seven-year period.
The Shaw Media-Hot Docs Funds aim to increase the quantity and quality of social, cultural and political one-off documentaries produced in Canada by Canadian-based production companies. In nurturing Canadian talent and giving voice to a diversity of viewpoints, the Funds will ultimately help Canadian documentaries reach new audiences.
Thus far the Shaw Media-Hot Docs Funds have supported 54 Canadian documentary projects with $1,000,000 in completion grants and $359,000 in no-interest loans.”

“The Soros Justice Media Fellowships support writers, print and broadcast journalists, bloggers, filmmakers, and other individuals with distinct voices proposing to complete media projects for local, regional, and national markets that engage the public and spur debate on one or more of the Open Society Foundations’ U.S. criminal justice priorities. The fellowships aim to mitigate the time, space, and market constraints that often discourage individuals from pursuing important but marginalized, controversial or unpopular issues in a comprehensive manner. Media fellowships are one year in duration, and fellows are expected to make their projects their full-time work during the term of the fellowship.”
